Overview

Back in the day (say 2003 or so), having an iPod made you a ritzy, cool, hipster-before-hipsters-existed kind of person. All you needed was your shiny white iPod (pre-click wheel, of course) and everybody knew you were the man. Over the years however, iPods became readily available to all sorts of people across the market, with prices dropping to as low as $45 for the most recent incarnation of the iPod Shuffle. It seems that our mass market solution to the relatively low prices of Apple's coveted mp3 player, is to create a range of the most expensive accessories possible. Almost like a competition, diamond encrusted and solid gold iPod accessories have popped up at an alarming pace. The two aforementioned cases, in particular, cost about $12,500 and $100,000, respectively. Is this really necessary? Probably not. Is it simply within our rights to freedom of expression to express not only our individual tastes but our individual bank accounts? Perhaps.
